The foreign exchange (currency, ForEx, or FX) market is where currency trading takes place. FX transactions typically involve one party purchasing a quantity of one currency in exchange for paying a quantity of another. The foreign exchange market that we see today started evolving during the 1970s when worldover countries gradually switched to floating exchange rate from their erstwhile exchange rate regime, which remained fixed as per the Bretton Woods system till 1971.

Today, the FX market is one of the largest and most liquid financial markets in the world, and includes trading between large banks, central banks, currency speculators, corporations, governments, and other institutions. The average daily volume in the global foreign exchange and related markets is continuously growing. Traditional daily turnover was reported to be over US$3.2 trillion in April 2007 by the Bank for International Settlements.[1] Since then, the market has continued to grow. According to Euromoney’s annual FX Poll, volumes grew a further 41% between 2007 and 2008.[2]

The purpose of FX market is to facilitate trade and investment. The need for a foreign exchange market arises because of the presence of multifarious international currencies such as US Dollar, Pound Sterling, etc., and the need for trading in such currencies.

Intel Core i7 is a family of three Intel desktop x86-64 processors, the first processors released using the Intel Nehalem microarchitecture and the successor to the Intel Core 2 family. All three current models and two upcoming models are quad-core processors.[1][2][3][4] The Core i7 identifier applies to the initial family of processors[5][6] codenamed Bloomfield.[7] Intel representatives state that the moniker Core i7 does not have any deeper meaning. The name continues the use of the Core brand.[8] Core i7, first assembled in Costa Rica, [9] was officially launched on November 17, 2008 [10] and is manufactured in Arizona, New Mexico and Oregon, though the Oregon plant is moving to the next generation 32 nm process.

Features

The Nehalem microarchitecture has many new features, some of which are present in the Core i7. The ones that represent significant changes from the Core 2 include:

* The new LGA 1366 socket is incompatible with earlier processors.
* On-die memory controller: the memory is directly connected to the processor.
o Three channel memory: each channel can support one or two DDR3 DIMMs. Motherboards for Core i7 have four (3+1) or six DIMM slots instead of two or four, and DIMMs can be installed in sets of three or two.
o Support for DDR3 only.
o No ECC support.
* The front side bus has been replaced by the Intel QuickPath Interconnect interface. Motherboards must use a chipset that supports QuickPath.
* The following caches:
o 32 KB L1 instruction and 32 KB L1 data cache per core
o 256 KB L2 cache (combined instruction and data) per core
o 8 MB L3 (combined instruction and data) “inclusive”, shared by all cores
* Single-die device: all four cores, the memory controller, and all cache are on a single die.
* “Turbo Boost” technology allows all active cores to intelligently clock themselves up in steps of 133 MHz over the design clock rate as long as the CPU’s predetermined thermal and electrical requirements are still met.[11]
* Re-implemented Hyper-threading. Each of the four cores can process up to two threads simultaneously, so the processor appears to the OS as eight CPUs. This feature was present in the older NetBurst microarchitecture but was dropped in Core.
* Only one QuickPath interface: not intended for multi-processor motherboards.
* 45nm process technology.
* 781M transistors for the quad core version.
* 263mm2 Die size.
* Sophisticated power management can place an unused core in a zero-power mode.
* Support for SSE4.2 & SSE4.1 instruction sets.

A desktop computer can be an expensive investment, but most of that expense usually goes to the monitor and the gear inside the case. After all, an extraordinarily expensive case is still only $600 and nobody’s going to put a case like that over hardware that costs less than two or three times as much, right? Well, what if the case was made of platinum and diamonds? Zeus, a Japanese manufacturer, is selling a computer in just such a case. Their PC, called Jupiter, is the most expensive desktop computer in the world.

Jupiter features a case made of platinum and encrusted with jewels arranged in the shapes of constellations. As for the hardware, Jupiter features Intel’s 3GHz E6850 Core 2 Duo CPU, 2GB of DDR 2 memory, a 1TB hard drive and a dual Blu-Ray/HD DVD drive. Additionally, it ships with a 24” 1920×1200 native resolution monitor.

The world’s most expensive desktop PC has been released in Japan, where it can be purchased for ¥80,000,000 ($748,720 USD). Of course, if you’re on a tight budget then you could opt for gold instead of platinum, reducing the price to ¥60,000,000 ($561,540).

In 1982 GriD Systems released the Compass 1100 laptop costing about $10,000 (inflation adjusted $20,200). Even this cost pales in comparison to the reports of a costly laptop that luxury manufacturer Luvaglio London is set to release in the near future by special order the most expensive laptop ever sold, with a price tag of a million dollars.

As of now all of the details are very sparse and the technical specifications have not been made fully available. We aren’t even sure what this laptop is made with to give it a cost of $1,000,000, but the exterior looks impressive. You can bet with a price this excessive, the expensive laptop will be a spectacle of precious metals and materials and include more than a couple gemstones.

In late 2005 the Dutch company Ego Lifestyle B.V. released the Tulip E-Go Diamond laptop, which was previously the world’s most expensive laptop and this mobile computer had over 80 total carats of diamonds and a retail price of €283,000.

Most people enjoy having a quality cell phone, but they also recognize that cellular phones are a consumable good and will have to be replaced within in a few years. For this reason, people often do not purchase the most expensive cell phone when they purchase their mobile. Some, though, must have a costly mobile phone. The world’s most expensive cell phones were made to satisfy just that type of person.

5. Nokia 8800 Arte with pink diamonds
$134,000

Designed by Peter Aloisson, this solid 18k white gold phone features over 680 pink and white brilliant cut diamonds totaling over 21.5 carats. Some of the phone’s features are a 3.15 MP camera with autofocus and video, a music player, Bluetooth and voice memo.

4. Sony Ericsson Black Diamond
$300,000

The price of this phones comes from actual state of the art technology instead of a bunch of shiny rocks—but that doesn’t mean it lacks visual appeal. OLED technology underneath the polycarbonate skin that covers the phones entire face gives the 4 megapixel screen a borderless look. The mirror finish gives the phone a sleek, futuristic look.

3. Vertu Signature Cobra
$310,000

This gaudy phone is so exclusive that only eight will ever be made. Designed by French jeweler Boucheron, the Signature Cobra is made with two diamonds, two emeralds and 439 rubies. For buyers who are only filthy rich, rather than obscenely rich, twenty-six of the less flashy (read: no rubies) Signature Python phones will be available for a mere $115,000. Both phones will feature the real draw.

They have frikkin’ snakes on them. Awesome.

2. The Diamond Crypto Smartphone
$1.3 million

One candidate for world’s most expensive cell phone is the Diamond Crypto Smartphone, created by luxury accessory producer Peter Aloisson of Moscow-based JSC Ancort. Its price stems from the platinum body, the cover adorned with 50 diamonds—including eight which are rare blue diamonds. Additionally, the Ancort logo and the navigation key are made of 18k rose gold.

Built on the Windows CE, this most expensive cell also features a high-resolution color TFT display and a 256 bit cryptographic algorithm. This expensive mobile phone is capable of SMS, MMS, E-mail, Internet, WAP, JAVA support and also has a media player.

1. GoldVish ‘Le Million’ Piece Unique
$1.3 million

Guinness World Records certified GoldVish SA’s ‘Le Million’ Piece Unique on January 29th, 2008. The Geneva-based luxury communications company’s expensive mobile phone was designed by Emmanuel Gueit as an addition to the Illusion Collection. The phone is made of 18k white gold and set with 20 carats of VVS1 (only microscopically flawed) diamonds. The phone also features Bluetooth, 2 GB of storage, FM radio, a digital camera and MP3 playback.

The Guinness-backed world’s most expensive cell phone is available only by special order.

An expensive diamond necklace is more than a simple accessory. It’s a statement of opulence that will set members of your family apart for generations. Check out some of the world’s most expensive diamond necklaces.

H. Stern’s Venus Necklace – $3.17 million

This 110-carat diamond necklace features a number of cushion, square and pear-cut diamonds set in 18k noble gold. Even the clasp is exquisite, featuring a 14-point diamond star. This is truly a piece that looks just as good from behind as it does from the front.

The De Beers’ Marie-Antionette Necklace – $3.7 million

From the De Beers High-Jewellery collection, this luxurious necklace features over 181 carats of mixed cut diamonds. Beneath the deep pink diamond (1.84 carats) on the first string are two yellow diamonds (5.24 and 7.06) along the second and third strings. The 8.05 carat pear-shaped white diamond hanging from the fourth string, though, is the showstopper on this beautiful piece of jewelry.

Neil Lane’s Diamond Necklace – $4 million

The 140 carats of diamonds featured on this valuable necklace feature three different cuts—pear, cushion and teardrop. The diamonds are set in platinum along the six strings that make up this necklace.

Garrard’s Heart of the Kingdom Ruby – $14 million

The most expensive necklace in the world features a 40.63-carat, heart-shaped Burmese ruby surrounded by 155 carats of diamonds. Burmese ruby is one of the most sought after varieties of ruby due to its blood-red hue. This gem is particularly valuable due to its extraordinary size—Burmese rubies rarely exceed a few carats!

The most expensive necklace can also be worn as a tiara.

If you think all gold is the same, think again. Scotgold, an Australian mining company, has recently purchased the Cononish mine in Tyndrum, a small village in Scotland, which produces the most expensive gold in the world—Scottish gold.

A ring made of Scottish gold
from the Scottish Gold Collection.

Scottish gold is heavily valued for its yellow color, rarity and the back-breaking sluicing process used to gather it. The expensive gold’s price can be more than five times that of normal gold. The Cononish mine was approved in 1996 for the mining of 25,000 ounces of gold per year. Unfortunately, a steady decrease in the price of gold shelved the project for the ten years before Scotgold bought the mine.

One important work of Scottish gold is the Crown of Scotland, part of the Honours of Scotland. The Honours are the oldest set of royal regalia in the United Kingdom. The Crown itself was made in 1540 for King James V.

The world’s most expensive gold is currently valued at around $1400 per ounce.

When future archaeologists study the remains of the 21st century, our stadiums may be some of the most some of the most visited historical sites. Like the Colosseum of Rome, these structures aren’t just places of human struggles for the entertainment of the masses; they’re also works of art. Currently, London’s Wembley Stadium is the most expensive stadium in the world.

Completed in March 2007, the most expensive stadium was built on the site of the original Wembley stadium, which was also known as the “Home of Football.” Construction on the stadium began in 2003.

It was built by Multiplex from designs by HOK Sport and Foster and Partners. It seats 90,000 people, making it the structure with the third highest capacity in London.
Of course, the most remarkable feature of the new Wembley Stadium is the Wembley Arch, which spans 1040 feet. That arch, in fact, is the longest single span roof structure in the world.

Funded by a number of organizations—Sport England, Wembley National Stadium Limited, The Football Association, The Department for Culture Media and Sport and The London Development Agency—the world’s most expensive stadium cost over $1.5 billion to build. Afterwards, it was handed over to The Football Association and has hosted not only football but also musicians like George Michael, Madonna, Metallica, Muse and the Foo Fighters.

Calling them airports is an understatement. With over fifteen miles of aviation-related commercial properties surrounding some of the largest airfields, these massive urban sprawls are more properly known as aerotropolises. For simplicity’s sake, though, we’ll just call them the world’s most expensive airports.

Currently, the most expensive airport is Hong Kong International Airport, located on Chek Lap Kok island in (surprisingly enough) Hong Kong. With over 47 million passengers in 2007, HKIA is also one of the world’s busiest airports. Passengers may fly in or out via a number of airlines, including Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong Express, Air Hong Kong and many others with “Hong Kong” in their names. For its $20 billion construction, the airport was awarded a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Unfortunately for HKIA, it will soon lose that place.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the new record-breaking aerotropolis is being constructed in Dubai. Dubai World Central International, being constructed south of Dubai near Jebel Ali, will cost $33 billion for its infrastructure alone. The plans call for an airfield that can accommodate the latest superjumbo jets, hotels, shopping malls, two 18-hole golf courses and a residential city that can house 750,000 people. Of course, this sort of project takes a lot of time to complete and DWC is no exception. It isn’t expected to be operational until 2017. By that time, yet another record-breaking airport project may be started.

Other aerotropolises include Brisbane Airport in Australia, Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Incheon International Airport in South Korea, Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia and at least five within the continental United States.

Billionaire Steve Wynn spent US$2.7 billion on on Wynn Las Vegas, which opened in April, 2005 making it the most expensive casino ever built. It does not seem like this title will be held by the Wynn for very long though.

The Las Vegas Sands Corp, MGM Mirage and three other bidders are competing for the right to build Singapore’s first casino resort in the city-state that Merrill Lynch estimates will cost US$3 billion.

It has also just been announced that the Stardust Casino in Las Vegas is to be replaced by a $4-Billion hotel-casino-shopping complex tentatively called Echelon Place. In early 2007, the Stardust will be demolished as construction begins on Echelon Place, which is scheduled to open in 2010.

MGM Mirage is planning a $5-billion complex called CityCenter that would include hotels, a casino, stores and condominiums. Will it be the most expensive casino in the world when it opens its doors?
